Arizona Gila Monsters Game Day Staff program

Beyond the Court: Special Needs Athletes Take Their Place in Pro Basketball

October 01, 2026

The Arizona Gila Monsters were never going to be just a basketball team.

This season, we're launching something that goes far beyond wins and losses: a Game Day Staff program that brings individuals with special needs and intellectual and developmental disabilities directly into the world of professional basketball - not as spectators, but as essential members of the operation.

Here's how it works. We teach them. Real skills, real responsibilities: running the music and DJ booth, handling stats, filming content, managing hospitality, announcing, working social media, and more. Then they perform those roles live on game day, side by side with our staff, in front of real crowds at real home games.

This isn't charity. It's opportunity. Every member of the Game Day Staff earns their spot, learns their craft, and becomes part of the heartbeat of Gila Monsters basketball.

The journey starts now:

  • Interviews begin tomorrow, Friday, October 2 - candidates meet with our team to find the role that fits their talents.
  • Training begins October 17 at the Purple & White Game - our new staff will train live during the event at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Chandler, learning the ropes in a real game day environment.

To the families, the athletes, and everyone who believes sports should be for everybody: this is your invitation. Come watch. Come be part of it.

This is bigger than basketball. It's about inclusion, opportunity, and community - and it's only the beginning.
